World Obesity welcomes adoption of the Political Declaration on NCDs and mental health
ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø welcomes the by UN Member States.
For the first time, global commitments on NCDs and mental health have been brought together in a single Political Declaration - an important and positive step that reflects growing recognition of the need for integrated, people-centred approaches to health. The inclusion of specific global targets for 2030 further strengthens the potential for accountability and progress.
At the same time, the Declaration does not yet reflect the full scale and urgency of the obesity challenge. Obesity affects over one billion people worldwide and is a leading driver of NCDs, preventable mortality, and rising health system costs.
Yet it remains insufficiently recognised as a chronic disease requiring dedicated prevention, treatment, and long-term care. Without stronger action, nearly half of the global population could be living with overweight or obesity within the next decade, with the greatest impact felt in low- and middle-income countries.
OUR ASKSThe adoption of the Declaration nevertheless creates a critical opportunity to move from political commitment to implementation.
Closing the gap between ambition and impact will require accelerating the uptake of WHO recommendations, integrating obesity prevention and care into universal health coverage, and investing across the full continuum of care - from prevention and early intervention to evidence-based treatment and long-term management.
We look forward to working with governments, UN agencies, civil society, and people with lived experience to translate these commitments into meaningful action.
Progress on NCDs must deliver equitable, measurable benefits for populations worldwide - and addressing obesity as a central driver of NCDs will be essential to achieving that goal.
